Kwanzaa Celebration

Each of the seven days of Kwanzaa represents a different principle of the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles). When a new candle is lit each day it represents one of these principles.

Many families give the honor of lighting the candles to the youngest
child. Some to the eldest family member. Others might have a different family member lighting the candles each night.

kinara01

The First Day of Kwanzaa (December 26)

On the first day of Kwanzaa the black candle is lit in the Kinara. The black candle represents the first principle – Umoja (oo-MOH-jah): Unity.
The person who lights the candle might make a statement about the first
principle and its meaning. Sometimes a passage or poem is read relating to what the principle means and how it relates to their life.

Then the Umoja (Unity Cup) might be filled with fruit juice and
shared among those gathered. Each takes a drink and passes to the next.

Some families prefer to use a Unity cup for each member, or the cup can just be left in the center of the Kwanzaa table.

After the sharing of the Unity cup the candles are extinguished till the next day.

kinara01

The Second Day of Kwanzaa (December 27)

On the second day the black candle is again lit, as well as the
farthest red candle on the left. This represents the 2nd principle of
Kwanzaa –Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-LEE-ah): Self-Determination.

Again a statement about the second principle and its meaning might be
made. Or possibly a passage or poem is spoken or read which relates to
what the principle means and how it relates to their life. The family
shares the Unity cup and the candles are extinguished.

kinara01

The Third Day of Kwanzaa (December 28)

On the third day the black candle is lit, then the farthest left red,
and then the farthest right green candle. This represents the 3rd
principle of Kwanzaa – Ujima (oo-JEE-mah): Collective work and responsibility.

The third principle is discussed. The family shares the Unity cup and the candles are extinguished.

The Fourth Day of Kwanzaa (December 29)

On the fourth day the black candle is lit, then the farthest left
red, the farthest right green. And then the next red candle on the left.
This represents the 4th principle of Kwanzaa – Ujamaa (oo-jah-MAH):Collective economics.

The fourth principle is discussed. The family shares the Unity cup and the candles are extinguished.

The Fifth Day of Kwanzaa (December 30)

On the fifth day the black candle is lit, then the farthest left red,
the farthest right green, the next red and then the next green candle.
This represents the 5th principle of Kwanzaa – Nia (NEE-ah): Purpose.

The fifth principle is discussed. The family shares the Unity cup and the candles are extinguished.

The Sixth Day of Kwanzaa (December 31)

On the sixth day the black candle is lit, then the farthest left red,
the farthest right green, the next red, the next green and then the
final red candle. This represents the 6th principle of Kwanzaa – Kuumba (koo-OOM-bah): Creativity.

The sixth day, which occurs on New Years Eve, is a special day. This
is the day of the Kwanzaa Karamu or Kwanzaa Feast. In the spirit of
celebration many families invite their friends and family to join in the
festivities.

Create a party atmosphere with additional Kwanzaa decorations. Dress
up in traditional or traditional inspired clothing. Play African or
African American music. Cook your favorite foods and special holiday
dishes. Invite your guests to contribute to the feast by bringing along
their favorite dishes. The children and/or the Adults can perform plays,
read uplifting passages, poems or stories. Maybe one of the adults will
be a story teller for the day. Remember the principle of the day is
Kuumba (creativity). So be creative!!

On this special day we remember our ancestors when the Unity cup is
shared. After everyone has taken a drink the candles are extinguished.

But before the Karamu is over, the eldest member of those present
will read the Tamshi La Tutaonana (TAM-shi la Tu-ta-u-NA-na). The Tamshi
La Tutaonana was written by Dr. Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa, as a
farewell statement to the feast and the year.

Everyone stands as the elder reads:

Strive for discipline, dedication, and achievement in
all you do. Dare struggle and sacrifice and gain the strength that
comes from this. Build where you are and dare leave a legacy that will
last as long as the sun shines and the water flows. Practice daily
Umoja, Kujichagulia, Ujima, Ujamaa, Nia, Kuumba, and Imani. And may the
wisdom of the ancestors always walk with us. May the year’s end meet us
laughing, and stronger. May our children honor us by following our
example in love and struggle. And at the end of next year, may we sit
together again, in larger numbers, with greater achievement and closer
to liberation and a higher level of life.
Then the elder leads the guests in the Harambee (ha-RAM-bee) salute.
Each person raises their right fist about as high as their shoulder,
then pulls down forcefully until the elbow is next to next to their
torso, saying “Harambee!” This is done seven times in unison.

This concludes the Karamu celebration.

The Seventh Day of Kwanzaa (January 1)

On the seventh day the black candle is lit, then the farthest left
red, the farthest right green, the next red candle, the next green, the
final red and then the final green candle. This represents the 7th
principle of Kwanzaa – Imani (ee-MAH-nee): Faith.

The seventh principle is discussed. The family shares the Unity cup and all seven candles are extinguished. Kwanzaa is over.
Since Kwanzaa is a relatively new holiday, you and your family can
use your creativity and imagination when deciding how to celebrate the
holiday. Over time you and your family will establish your own
traditions that can be enjoyed each year as well as passed on to the
next generations.
You and your family can use great creativity in your observance of the holiday. Set up an area in your home for the Kwanzaa altar or table. Decorate your home in the same spirit as other holidays. Create posters and banners to hang on the walls, add African sculptures or other artwork. Crafts and decorations can be created to be used in your Kwanzaa display.
Since Kwanzaa is a relatively new holiday, you and your family can use your creativity and imagination when deciding how to celebrate the holiday. Over time you and your family will establish your own traditions that can be enjoyed each year as well as passed on to the next generations.

MAKEUP IDEAS FOR NEW YEARS EVE!

I've already given you plenty of ideas for holiday beauty this season — including alternative takes on glitter, last minute updos, and pulling it all off with only a few products in your bathroom. Yep, we've covered all your bases. So, what could possibly be left?

New Year's Eve makeup is  usually a festive party look, yes, but remember these are also your very first hair and makeup decisions of 2016.

In hopes of starting next year off on the right foot,  here are hot ideas that are sure to make the ball drop. Scroll down for full step-by-steps, and get ready to have a very beautiful 2015 night out.

The first step is to do a pencil liner — thick at the end, and then taper in. Make sure to lay the liner down flat, and don't hold it perpendicular. This way, you get more surface painted, and it takes a cat-eye shape. Run that inside the rim of the lower lid and under the lower lashes. Then, smudge the whole thing with a brush so it looks more diffused.
Devezin Cosmetics Natural Eye Liner in Silence, $9, available at Devezin Cosmetics.

Now, apply a little bit of concealer to the first half of the eyelid, (ex: near the tear duct) where the eyeliner isn't,Then, apply your pop color. The concealer will amplify whatever pigment lays on top, so it goes on more powerful.  Use Grease Paints for this step, and then layer that with a matching glitter eye shadow. TIP: For the shadows, I recommend using a sponge-tip applicator, because it grabs the pigment better and allows you to apply it precisely. You don't want it to blend too much — the drama is in the contrast. Finish with mascara on top and bottom.

Devezin Cosmetics Dramatic Effects Shimmers, $16, available at Devezin Cosmetics; Devezin Cosmetics Loose Paints in HD Bronze, $16, available at Devezin Cosmetics ; Devezin Cosmetics Lengthening Mascara, $9, available at Devezin Cosmetics .

After, shade just under the cheekbones with a little bit of bronzer. And then, add a little bit of blush in a warm apricot-pink shade called Flirt. It adds a bit of sweetness to the look, just on the apple of the cheek.

Devezin Cosmetics  Highlighting Bronzer, $18, available at Devezin Cosmetics ; Devezin Cosmetics Blush in Flirt, $18.50, available at Devezin Cosmetics.

Style Is Going with What Works best For You

Style is Not obeying silly Fashion Rules- Well, maybe you just love faux animal prints. You've crave them long before they hit the runways. You have dug through many vintage store isles to add to y our collection. Wearing these pieces make you feel alive! or different. etc. Style is having the good sense not to wear more than one piece at a time, please. Style is knowing not to wear these extraordinary pieces to that interview or to a wedding... Get my drift? Style = Expression
It’s the total combination of the way you dress, talk, move your body, or do anything for that matter. Simply put, it’s how we express our inner being outwardly. This includes all of our thoughts, emotions, interests, and values. Everything on the outside is merely a reflection of what’s on the inside.

Eric Devezin | Make-up Artist • Hair Stylist | Eric Devezin.com

If I've learned one thing from being a professional makeup artist, it's to never give up. Multiple times in life, you will be the underdog. You will be criticized, misunderstood, and unappreciated. On your way to the top, you will be stepped on, spit on, and sometimes, even hated. However, it is this treacherous journey to glory which makes the top so much more rewarding. If one truly believes and has the talent, ambition, and support, they will succeed in every desire.

One of my favorite things: "Bronde"

New for Fall: the best combination of blonde and brown?  Brace yourselves for “Bronde” because its here, and it’s making a bold statement in Hollywood and all over the world. Also known as the perfect hair color and makeup combo, Bronde gives you a great blend of each color by only adding area highlights to your face and hair texture. Check out Jennifer Lopez  rocking the bronde makeup and hair look.

Try something new this fall...Nothing inspires me more than seeing a community support their loved ones and lift each other up.

Do you have a lash ritual?

How to Master Lashes Like An Expert!

For many a celebrity, there's not a beauty-enhancing product more
essential than mascara. It opens your eyes and brings depth to those
irises—all with only a few swipes. To be frank, often times, it’s less about the brand and much more
about the applicator. Although, I will say that I tend to prefer smoother
mascara over a creamy one because those tend to clump more and
they also feel heavy on the lashes. Read on to discover  my signature feathery, bright-eyed look.

Let's Get Started

I recommend a lengthening mascara. The applicator should not have any densely packed bristles. Apply one coat of mascara to clean lashes wiggling the brush upwards from the base of
the lash. Be sure to coat all of your lashes once, but double-up on the
center lashes. Using the same mascara coat the back of your lashes dragging upwards from mid-lash to tip — hold your mascara at a vertical angle and focus on the outer lashes, dragging your mascara wand outward from the base. You want to be sure that your outer lashes are as separated as possible. Focus on the lashes on the inner corners of your eyes and repeat the steps above, hold your arm at a 90 degree angle keeping your mascara wand parallel to the floor and run the wand over the tips of your lashes. Coat your bottom lashes with a single coat of mascara, dragging the wand from mid-lash to tip. Avoid touching the base of the lash to keep your lower lash line clean.  New Trick: To make your eyelashes look even thicker a trick is to apply a coat of black eyeliner to the upper waterline of your eyes. To do this, pull up your lashes just a bit, and run the black eyeliner on the top of the inner waterline. To give it more staying power, dip your eyeliner pencil in  Devezin Cosmetics black waterproof gel eyeliner and line the waterline. Even though
this is a subtle difference, the black base it creates automatically
gives the appearance of thicker, fuller lashes.

Never the pump: Many think pumping the wand in and
out of the mascara tube will garner more product on the bristles. At the
same time, however, pumping it allows more air to enter the tube and
can dry out your mascara more quickly.
Instead, gently twist the wand from side to side while it's in the tube
to pick up product without aerating the product.

An addition to the lashes: Make your mascara
multitask. You can also use mascara as an eyeliner by simply applying
it to the lash-line  with an eyeliner brush.

Beware: Prevent the spread of bacteria by replacing your makeup products every three months.

Your fuller, thicker lashes are just a few brush strokes away! I hope
these tricks and tips help you in getting the most from your lashes. For
more information on thickening mascaras check out my top Thickening Mascara.

Hot Right Now: Devezin Cosmetics Top Trend In Beauty

Brows are everything!!

Style is always evolving and here are our favorite makeup products for fall.

That’s right! For naturally beautiful brows, all you need is a little pencil power. Natural Eye Liner pencils, new from Devezin Cosmetics, are at the top of the line. By
framing your features, your eyebrows set the tone for your whole look,
so you first have to decide on the shape you desire. These days, fuller,
more natural arches are the rage, so try to go easy on the tweezers.

Here are three hot looks to try this fall:

1) Distinct brow. The Devezin Cosmetics Natural Eye Liner Pencils features
an ultra-fine point to shape and precisely fill in brows for a
long-lasting, non-smudging matte finish. The pencil is available in ten
shades for maximum blending: Absolute Brown, Natural, Smoke, Silence and more.

2) Essential brow. The softly hued Devezin Cosmetics Perfect Brush on Brows creates
a natural brow with a youthful, subtle sheen. Also available in Adobe,
Sable, Silence and Walnut, this product adds a little extra
oomph for night wear, too.

3) Complexity brow. For a beautiful sun-kissed effect, the Devezin Cosmetics Sheer Effects Shimmers offers wearable shimmer and tint in gold or bronze that accentuates both eye color and hair color.

BEAUTY TIP! When using pencils, define your brow arch
with soft, upward strokes starting at the base of the hairline. Then
use a more defined brush to even out the color and fill in sparse areas.

Testimonials

"I'm so glad I came across the runway makeup class at Devezin Beauty; it was one of the most engaging and well-received courses we've hosted for the group. The instructor, Michelle Henderson, was very engaging and personable, which is hard to convey when half of the audience is dialing into the presentation and listening over the phone. We walked away with new insight and tools to use throughout our work days. In fact, colleagues stated they learned more during this one hour session than they did during an entire college course on public speaking. I will recommend Devezin Beauty and Michelle to anyone looking to build their confidence and brush up on their makeup skills."

Brazilian Bikini Wax

An important step to prepare for a bikini wax is to avoid swimming or sunning oneself for a full 24 hours prior to the wax. After the waxing, you will want to consider the same for a couple of days. The skin can have some redness or bumping, which can be helped by ice. There is also the occasional ingrown hair, which can be iced, and then have anti-bacterial cream applied to ward off infection. Aestheticians recommend gently exfoliating the pubic area before the wax, and then doing so regularly after the wax to cut down on ingrown hairs.

If you want to look your best in a tiny bikini, the Brazilian wax is the way to go. However, there are plenty of things you need to consider before showing up for your appointment. You need to get your body ready, but also consider your state of mind, particularly if it’s your first time.

Avoid Trimming

The ideal length of hair for the best bikini wax is between 1/8" - 1/4". Anything shorter will not deliver satisfied results. If it’s much longer, you’re just creating more work for your esthetician, who will have to trim before waxing.  Tip: If you schedule your waxing sessions every six weeks, you’ll be in that hair growth sweet spot.

Schedule your appointment

Even the strictest waxing schedule should make room for your period. If you’re interested in the least painful time to get a Brazilian, that’s the week after your cycle. You should never schedule an appointment for a day or two before or after your period, since you’re likely to experience a lot more pain. Just because some estheticians are still willing to do it during your period doesn’t mean you should take them up.

Moisturize and Hydrate

Keeping your skin moisturized is very important, but don’t overdo it with lotion, even if it’s a light one. Make sure you do not use any oils on your skin 24 hours before your appointment.

Exfoliate before

If you want to prevent ingrown hairs, exfoliation is a must.

Prepare for Pain

Avoid Advil, Ibuprofen or Aspirin, since they are blood thinners and can extend any bleeding.

Expect the First Time Is Always the Worst

After you get through it, the hair follicle will get thinner and easier to pull out.

Bring the Right Underwear

The last thing you want after waxing is friction. One of the most important things to do before a Brazilian wax is to have a comfortable pair of panties. Full-coverage underwear made from soft cotton will keep you comfy and reduce any painful friction. Tip: replace those skinny jeans with sweatpants.

Avoid Wine and Spirits

Drinking alcohol and stimulants like coffee is a bad idea before a Brazilian. They both tighten your pores, and  dehydrates you, which mean more pain.

Don't plan on doing anything physical right afterward. You will probably be a little exhausted and your skin will most likely be sore for a day or so. Remember, you've wanted this for a while so the pain is worth it! (That's what you tell yourself while its happening.)

It is important to follow a few basic steps when you prepare for a bikini wax. First, of course, you should not get a bikini wax if you are diabetic, suffer from psoriasis or other skin conditions, or if you take Retinol or Accutane. If you are unsure, ask you physician whether you can go ahead with a wax.

Tips for: 2016 Makeup Looks

The makeup trend for Winter 2016 is all about bold lips and perfect eyebrows.

The key elements to achieve this look are:
  • Well defined eyebrows
  • Nude eyes, maybe add matte eyeshadow and lengthening mascara
  • Pale to perfectly matte skin, contoured with greyish tones to create natural shadows
  • Intense defined cheekbones
  • Bold red lips contoured with a darker liner, going
over the lip line are most important to this look.
  • These tips
will guarantee a fresh face and more importantly-- pretty and plump lips (Trend alert).  Be very precise when applying  to Cupid's bow!
Maintain your complexion: perhaps using cc cream can standardize your natural color avoiding the unpleasant. And, for those who DARE to wear a burgundy lip, blues and purples
for the eyes.

Remember to wear bright lipstick only if the makeup on
the eyes is light and natural. For a more seductive look-- go with dark shadows; blue, dark purple and green to achieve the perfect smokey eyes.

(Trend alert) Do not neglect the
eyebrows.

The New limited collection of  "SELENA" + Devezin Cosmetics lipsticks are a great choice for a sexy lip.

#1 Trick To Younger Looking Skin

There is nothing better than relaxing on the beach. You can listen to
the waves crash while enjoying the hot summer sun. Not only will you be
relaxed when you leave, you will also leave with a nice golden tan. The
only problem that some people have with this are tan lines, tan lines
can be a problem when wearing a strapless dress or top. If you are
tanning for an upcoming event such as a wedding, you will want to get
rid of those tan lines before you put on your dress.

5 Smart Summer Beauty Revelations

Eric Devezin on a few small changes that can make a huge difference:

I love Summer time for one simple reason: It's a reminder to get ready for the fall. The
perfect time to recharge, renew, and have fun. It's also a time when
many of us make promises to enjoy ourselves. So if you're going to make changes for the fall, choose now to make sure you really
deliver—and that you'll be happy with yourself at the end of the year. Here are a few fast, easy beauty tips
and changes to make now for benefits that last all year.

1. Take time to meditate. A few minutes of
uninterrupted time can do wonders for your mental health. Studies
have shown the connection between stress and acne as
well as stress and tea. Since it's caffeine-free, you don't have to
worry about getting dehydrated. Chamomile is my
favorite, and its equally good hot or cold.

2. Get your eyebrows professionally shaped.
Eyebrows are much more important than you may think. The simple step of
shaping your eyebrows will make a huge difference in the way you look,
even if it is the only thing you do. Find an eyebrow guru—get a
recommendation from a friend or professional makeup artist—and have them
professionally shape your eyebrows. Then they'll be easy to maintain on
your own, with some simple tweezing, after having them done just once.

3. Hide it. A good concealer makes
the most immediate and dramatic difference in how you look. It lightens
dark circles, brightens your face, and makes you look well rested. Look
for a creamy formula that's yellow based and one shade lighter than
your skin tone.  Dab on using your fingertips or a concealer brush and apply a
generous amount of concealer under the eyes, up to the lash lines and at
the innermost corner of the eyes. Gently pat with your fingertips to
smooth, then seal it with loose powder applied with a powder puff.

4. Bronze have more fun. Summer is right around the corner, so it’s time to pull out those
bronzers!  The trick to applying bronzer is to pick the best shade and
apply sparingly- too much and you’ll look dirty, and the wrong shade
will make you look  too tan…Use either a contour brush or a rounded face brush to apply just under the cheek bones, then blend upwards onto the cheeks. You can also apply bronzer along the temple and top of your forehead to give a sun kissed glow. Pick your correct shade- you want something that is just 2-3 shades darker than your skin. Bronzer
goes on after face makeup (foundation, concealer, and powder) but
before blush.

5.  Exercise is so important for your mind, mood, and body. Exercise has many benefits. It reduces depression and instantly lifts mood due to the production of endorphins, the feel-good hormones. No
matter how down you are feeling before you exercise, you will definitely feel a lot more upbeat by the end of your session.Try to find activities that you are good at and enjoy. If you have fun while you are working out, you will want to keep going.
